The potential of the JEM-EUSO telescope for the astrophysics of extreme energy photons

چکیده
Extreme energy photons are expected to be a minor component of the ultra high energy cosmic rays. Nevertheless, they are the carriers of very important astrophysical information related to the origin and propagation of such ultra energetic particles. JEM-EUSO is an orbital fluorescence telescope intended to observe the highest energy component of the cosmic rays, including photons and neutrinos. In this work we study several techniques to improve the discrimination between photon and proton showers in the context of the JEM-EUSO telescope. The most important parameter used to discriminate between protons and gammas is the atmospheric depth of the maximum of the showers, Xmax. However, it can be demonstrated that, for a given available statistics, additional information is needed in order to take advantage of the full potential of the instrument. We propose and study additional parameters, related to the shape of the longitudinal profile, in order to obtain a better discrimination than the one given by Xmax alone.

LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) is an important method in measuring atmospheric transparency that is used to correct fluorescence light yield from extensive air showers. For the JEM-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on Japanese Experimental Module) mission to observe ultra-high cosmic rays at the ISS (International Space Station) orbiting at 400 km altitude the method is used also to...
متن کاملOrigin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays in the era of Auger and Telescope Array
The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays is discussed in light of the latest observational results from the Pierre Auger Observatory, highlighting potential astrophysical sources such as active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, and clusters of galaxies. Key issues include their energy budget, the acceleration and escape of protons and nuclei, and their propagation in extragalactic radiation...
متن کاملSensitivity of JEM-EUSO to GRB Neutrinos
JEM-EUSO is a mission to study ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) by measuring the fluorescence light from giant air showers at the altitude of the International Space Station. In the tilted mode, JEM-EUSO will become very sensitive to the Čerenkov light from the earth skimming tau neutrinos at the energy range of 10eV. In this paper we will discuss high-energy tau neutrinos from nearby gamm...

The EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder of the JEM-EUSO mission, designed to be installed on-board the International Space Station before the end of this decade. The EUSO-Balloon instrument, conceived as a scaleddown version of the main mission, is currently developed as a payload of a stratospheric balloon operated by CNES, and will, most likely, be launched during the CNES flight campaign in 2014. متن کاملStatus of Silicon Photomultiplier Developments as optical Sensors for MAGIC/EUSO–like Detectors
MAGIC [2] is currently the world largest air Cherenkov telescope. MAGIC has been constructed to study sources of very high energy γ–rays (VHE–γ) in the energy range from a few tens of GeV up to a few tens of TeV. In the experiment, γ–rays are detected indirectly by collecting Cherenkov photons which are emitted in a VHE–γ induced electromagnetic cascade in the atmosphere. For a more comprehensi...
